Tips for Caring for Your Plumbing the Right Way

There are some simple tips you can follow to help protect your plumbing from problems and you can learn about some of them here:

Protect your pipes in freezing weather—If the temperature is freezing outside then you want to make sure you do all you can to prevent your pipes from freezing which can lead to them bursting and causing major problems for you.

Protect the pipes by unhooking the hose and storing it during freezing temps and shutting off your sprinkler system. Open the cabinets around your house with plumbing in them that's against an outside wall so those pipes can get heat. Put insulation tape on the outside pipes that are exposed to the elements.

Protect your pipes from clogging—The best way to prevent you pipes from clogging is to make sure you don't allow the wrong things to enter the plumbing system. Don't flush anything down the toilet except bodily fluids and toilet paper.

Don't allow an excessive amount of hair, lumps of tooth paste and small pieces of soap to go down the bathroom sinks. Don't put grease or oil down the kitchen sink, or food. If you have a disposal then food can go down it, but not foods that can damage it such as egg shells, pasta, rice or fibrous vegetables.

Protecting your pipes from septic backup—If your house is on septic then you want to be sure you prevent it from baking up by having the septic emptied when it's nearing full. In order to prevent it from needing to be emptied more than normal you should make sure you follow a few rules. Don't make a habit out of using harsh cleaners which can throw off the chemical balance in the septic tank, don't put anything you aren't supposed to down the pipes and do your best to limit your water usage as much as possible.

Have your water heater drained—You should have someone come out to drain your water heater according to the manufacturer's advice. This can help you to keep your water heater working for longer and you can decrease your chances of it needing repairs.

Following the information will help decrease your odds of dealing with plumbing problems.
